The company unveiled its “Synthetic Biological Intelligence” system on March 2. It forms the neural pathways of cells from human beings on a chip. This is referred to as an “evolving organic computing system.”
The technology allows code to “run directly on actual neurons, solving today’s complex problems.”
The project website states that “CL1” is the world’s first biological computer, which allows labs and medical centers to examine how neurons actually process information. This provides an alternative for animal testing while providing better data.
Researchers can now study the brain “with unprecedented clarity”, using CL1, through bio-computations which capture adaptability and learningability in neurons, and reveal disease mechanisms as well as the influence of connections on cognition.
SBI, according to its developers, is capable of rapid and flexible learning. This makes it superior to silicon AI chip used for training existing large language models.
Our neural systems are more efficient than traditional AI and require less energy to perform complex tasks. It’s not just another computer. The website of the project says: “This is computing technology that has been created from scratch.”
CL1 can be rented or purchased outright. Customers have remote access to it via cloud. The mass deployment is anticipated in the second half 2025.
Cortical Labs has been working on this idea for nearly six years. We’ve made major advances in the last few years […],”, said Dr. Hong Weng Chong.
The executive said that once SBI is put in users’ hands, all the capabilities of the system will be clear.
