Another entry in our series of reflective look backs at Bitcoin and crypto related tweets takes us back to 2016. While 2016 may not seem that long ago in the history of many topics, in the crypto world it might as well be like studying ancient Rome.
We think these retrospectives are extremely interesting and think you will too, especially if you weren’t around back then to witness them yourself.

#1 Ethereum hits 1 billion market cap in 2016
Erik Vorhees is one of the the oldest high profile figures in the crypto space. He founded and sold one of the most popular Bitcoin betting sites, SatoshiDice and sold it 2013; he's also the founder of ShapeShift.io a very popular crypto trading platform.
Back in 2016, Erik Vorhees found it tweet-worthy to announce that Ethereum had reached a 1 billion dollar market cap. (And it certainly was, for the time.)
Ethereum went live in 2015 and quickly started to make its way in the crypto-verse. For comparison, back in 2016, Bitcoin's market cap was in the 10 billion range.
This tweet is great to look back on considering that at the time of this writing Ethereum's market cap is 400 billion.
In five years, Ethereum has gone from representing 10% of Bitcoin's share to 40%, and talks of "flippening*" are increasing every day.
*Flippening is a term that describes the point at which any other cryptocurrency dethrones Bitcoin as the number one market cap coin in the world. Right now, Ethereum is by far the closest.
#2 Joe Rogan is “woke” for Bitcoin
For many people, Andreas Antonopoulos' first appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience in 2014 was their first entry way into Bitcoin. Joe had Andreas on as a guest on his wildly popular podcast and many Bitcoin fans were born.
Joe was blown away at various occasions in the episode while listening to Andreas speak about this "new"(to many) technology and all its capabilities.
Joe ended up having Andreas on a few more time and penned this playful tweet back in 2016.
We have our fingers crossed hoping for another Andreas/Joe Rogan link up. They are amazing!
#3 Andreas Antonopolous, the ultimate Bitcoin OG
Andreas Antonopolous, which we mentioned in the item above is a Bitcoin expert to say the least. He is considered one of the go to guys for Bitcoin and crypto related speaking events and has published many amazing books regarding the tech.
Back in 2016 he was one of the few people that were tweeting with significant volume about Bitcoin and receiving significant likes. We chose to highlight the above tweet because he put a very succinct spotlight on the difference between centralized and decentralized mediums.
If you haven't dove into some of Andreas' knowledge, be sure to check out his appearances on Joe Rogan for starters then move on to his books and his Podcasts.
#4 Satoshi has been revealed….or has he?
This tweet regarding Australian computer scientist was massive news, if only for a short time.
Mr. Wright was rumored to be Satoshi as early as 2015, but in 2016 Wright took the official stance that he was in fact Satoshi Nakamoto.
Initially the buzz was pretty big, with many in the crypto space excited to finally put a face to the man himself. However, the general consensus soon formed that he is not Satoshi.
That hasn't stopped Craig from continuing to self title himself as such, his website states right at the top that he is Satoshi Nakamoto.
Many believe that if he was in fact Satoshi, he would have no problem moving any of the original Bitcoin's attached to Satoshi's wallet.
We would officially take a stance on whether he is Satoshi or not, but since Craig Wright has begun suing people who denied that he is Satoshi - we will let you decide for yourself!
#5 Vitalik Pokes Fun At Craig Wright
You may notice this list has six entries, but this tweet piggy-backs off the previous entry.
Vitalik took to twitter shortly after Craig Wright's proclamation to poke fun at the notion and tweeting that he, Vitalik Buterin, is the founder of Ethereum.
This is a direct jab at Craig, considering that Vitalik is very publicly the creator of Ethereum.
Vitalik took it a step further in 2018 where he addressed Craig at a conference asking, "Why is this fraud allowed to speak at this conference?"
#6 Wikileaks And Bitcoin
The whistleblowing wiki, which was creating by now-jailed Julian Assange was the perfect fit for a decentralized money system.
In 2016 WikiLeaks received a milestone 2.9 million worth of Bitcoin donations. A source as recent as 2020 has found that WikiLeaks has received 46 million worth of BTC since 2010.
It's tough to say what the future of WikiLeaks is without Julian, but back in 2016, their receipt of nearly 3 million in Bitcoin was one of the biggest tweets of the year.
Nowadays, Twitter is jam packed with crypto related tweets and it's not uncommon to see mentions of millions of dollars of crypto donations on any given Tuesday.
In 2021, Jay-Z and Jack Dorsey of Twitter donated 500BTC towards making Bitcoin the internet currency.
